LOUISVILLE - age 97, died peacefully shortly after midnight on October 23, 2021. Virginia was born in Louisville on May 28, 1924; grew up in her beloved Crescent Hill neighborhood; graduated from J. M. Atherton High School for Girls and then the University of Louisville, where she was a member of Sigma Kappa. She taught school for a time, then enjoyed great success as an advertising copywriter for WINN Radio before she married. Virginia and Douglas B. Hancock were wed on October 20, 1951; they were together for 49 years until his death in 2000. A lover of all things Louisville, she was a subscriber to the Louisville Orchestra and Kentucky Opera; was a devoted patron of the Louisville Free Public Library; and, she and her husband spent many years volunteering at Recording for the Blind. In 1977, they moved to Mayfield, Kentucky, where Doug’s company had relocated. Wrenched from her beloved Louisville, she was surprised and delighted by the number of new friendships forged as a result, adding more layers to a long, happy life filled with many friends of all ages and nationalities. By 1986, Doug retired and they settled in St. Matthews, enjoying a succession of lovely neighbors. Virginia loved the written word and deeply enjoyed reading across many genres, always keeping several good books nearby, as well as the daily newspaper and her crossword puzzles. She was a stickler for proper grammar, also witty, fun-loving and a great storyteller. She loved a good game of Scrabble, maintaining a years-long game of A vs. B, playing honestly for both sides. She thoroughly enjoyed sending lovely handwritten notes and cards for every occasion and occurrence to her wide circle of friends around the world. Virginia, a member of Highland Presbyterian Church, was predeceased by her parents (John and Allie Kirchner), her husband, and her only sibling (Bob Kirchner and his wife Nancy). She is survived by her daughters, Barbara Hancock (Glenn Skaggs) and Beth Friedman; granddaughter Allie; and great-granddaughter Riley. Visitation: Thursday, October 28, 4 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., at Pearson’s, 149 Breckenridge Lane. Graveside service and burial on Friday, October 29, 11 a.m., at Cave Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Salvation Army of Louisville, the Louisville Orchestra or your favorite charity.
