Mary Maitland DeLand Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Mary Maitland Schwab DeLand joined her husband Frank Howard DeLand in heaven on June 3, 2022. Born to the late Joseph Leonard Schwab and Eleanor Agatha Cadden Schwab in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, November 20, 1927, she was the second of five children. When she was still a young child, the devastating effects of the Great Depression led the family to move to Greenup, Kentucky, where there was strong family support. Shortly thereafter, her parents acquired a dairy farm in neighboring Boyd County, where she spent the majority of her formative years. Her parents always emphasized the value of hard work and education, and Maitland graduated from Boyd County High School, 1st in her class. She was then rewarded with a scholarship to Marshall University where she completed her college career with a chemistry degree. She then attended medical school at the University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1948, one of only five women in the class. There she met her future husband and lifelong love, Frank DeLand. They were married April 9, 1949, in Taylorsville, Kentucky. Maitland relinquished her plans for a medical career to raise a family and support her husband’s long and varied career in medicine. Upon retirement in ‘95, Maitland and Frank moved back to Louisville to be closer to family. Even while raising her 4 children and helping her husband in his academic career, she continued her studies, sometimes in formal settings but also on her own. She loved literature, history, classical music, and opera. As well, she was a woman of deep faith. Frank and Maitland renewed their vows in the Church in their later years. They were an inseparable couple until Frank’s death in 2015 after nearly 66 years of marriage. She also kept current with modern academics, selflessly helping her children understand and love the value of a good education. We all remember the praise from Mamma for excellence in scholastic accomplishments … and the admonishments when we fell short. She instilled in us a commitment to excellence, willingness to accept new challenges, acceptance of responsibilities, and respect for everyone. As driven as she was, Mamma was not, however, all work and no play. She loved vacation times such as going to the beach and visiting family. She also took numerous overseas trips to Europe, China, Japan, the Middle East, and Central and South America. In short, her life was full of adventure and love. Maitland was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frank, her brothers John Joseph Schwab and Joseph Leonard Schwab II, and her sister Eleanor Alice Kates. She is survived by her brother Dr. James Matthew Schwab (Marie) of Louisville; her four children Dr. Eleanor Agatha DeLand Lederer (Dr. Paul R. Lederer) of Dallas Tx, Dr. Mary Maitland DeLand of New Orleans, Dr. Frank Howard DeLand III (Dr. Candace Walker DeLand) of Louisville, and Dr. Sarah Marie DeLand of New Orleans; six grandchildren, Mary Maitland Lederer Hemby (Matthew), Dr. Paul Andrew Lederer (Dr. Swati Batki), Stephanie Marie Lederer (Corey Burke Bonasarte), Philip DeLand Lederer, Dr. Claire Marie Maitland Noell (Dr. Brian William Hasselfeld), and Andrew Thomas Noell, Esq; and four great grandchildren, Liam DeLand Lederer, Jade Hira Lederer, Anezka Maitland Hemby, and Margot Maitland Hasselfeld. Maitland was nicknamed “Mikey” by her siblings. Papa called her “M M”. But we children will always know her as “Mamma”. Goodbye, Mamma. We’ll see you on the other side. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 AM Tuesday June 7, 2022 at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church 2119 Payne Street with burial to follow in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation 4-7 PM Monday at Pearson’s 149 Breckenridge Lane. Arrangements under the direction of Pearson's, "Where Louisville Goes To Remember".
