July 16, 1932 - July 23, 2020
Kay King Evans died peacefully at home on Thursday, July 23, 2020. She was born in Lexington, KY on July 16, to Efflo and Harriet King. She graduated from Lafayette High School and the University of Kentucky. Kay loved the Wildcats and was on campus in the 1950’s when UK was dominant in both basketball and football. She drove to Lexington for games and tailgating her whole life. GO BIG BLUE! Kay was a natural athlete who liked to compete. A cheerleader in high school and college, she later discovered tennis, racquetball and golf. She was a State Doubles Champion and played on several USTA teams at the sectional and national level. She was a State Racquetball Singles Champion, and played in the Seneca 18-hole league for fun and prizes for many years, always trying to hit it further. She also dove into country line dancing, rollerblading, cross-country skiing, reading, quilting, gardening, bridge, her children’s activities, the Presbyterian church, women’s rights, worldwide travel and 35+ years at the US Open – all with family and friends. Kay raised two strong daughters, teaching us many things we have and will continue to pass on to her grandchildren. She’s fondly remembered for having the high school hangout house; she volunteered in youth activities; and she was a fun grandmother with a hot tub and a trampoline who lived across the street from the playground. Kay says goodbye to her daughters, Sallie and Allison (Tom); grandchildren Lynn Bratcher (Rhodes), Hannah Coryell and Sam Coryell, Evan Scanlan and Tommy Scanlan; her sister, Marjorie Polites; and a loving family of nieces, nephews and cousins. Her brother, Bill King, preceded her in death. We are grateful to her caregivers, and especially Pam Cox. We will have a socially distanced celebration for Kay on Sunday, August 2nd from 3-7pm at her home in Louisville, 3102 Rock Creek Drive, 40207. We invite you to come share a toast or a story. If you were so inclined, in lieu of flowers Kay would appreciate donations to Highland Presbyterian Church, the University of Kentucky, the National Democratic Party (actblue.com), or a charity of your choice.
