Bruce Wayne Ferguson, Sr., 68, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2021 with his family by his side after a long hard battle fighting prostate cancer. He was born in 1953 in San Antonio, Texas, the eldest son of Bruce Lyons and Barbara Cobb Ferguson. Bruce graduated from Alfred University in 1975 and married Barbara Jean Allen (Scottsville, NY) on November 22, 1975. They moved to New York City where Bruce began his long and successful 46-year career in the insurance industry starting at Chubb & Son. He was recruited to Underwriters Safety and Claims, Inc. in Louisville in 1978, where he eventually became President. He, alongside his father, Bruce Lyons, brothers, Scott and Stuart, his son Bruce Jr. and countless other colleagues managed and grew Underwriters into the successful business it is today. Through his business success, he was a member and leader of several prominent business organizations including NASCO Insurance Group, The Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers, and Young Presidents’ Organization, where he served as the local Chapter Chair. Through these organizations he has known several members as colleagues and friends. Bruce was committed to serving the community where he lived and worked. He was a lifetime member of the Episcopal Church, and an active member of St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church for over 40 years. He served numerous civic organizations throughout the state. He served as Chairman of the Board for the Home of the Innocents, Kentucky Center for the Arts and Lincoln Heritage Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Bruce was an Eagle Scout and was awarded the Silver Beaver for his lifetime of service to scouting. He had a passion for helping children in need. His proudest civic achievement was serving as a long time Board member as well as the Chairman of the Board for Bellewood and Brooklawn. He was a member at Big Spring Country Club, Pendennis Club, Lake Sunapee Yacht Club and Baker Hill Golf Club. Bruce enjoyed traveling the world, reading, hunting and golfing. He loved spending time with his extended family and friends at the lake house in Sunapee, New Hampshire. Some of the family’s fondest memories were from their time spent with each other on the dock, the porch, the water, by the fire and around the dinner table in Sunapee. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Barbara Jean Ferguson; children, Bruce W. Jr. (Abbey), Kate Ferguson Weber (Chad) and Will; grandchildren, Bruce W. III (Tripp), Tate, Fallon, Delaney, Luke, Walker and Willow; mother, Barbara Cobb; brothers, Scott (Janie) and Stuart (Jennifer); Uncle Craig (Linda) of Darien, CT; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by his father Bruce Lyons (2011). The family is grateful to all of the doctors and nurses who provided wonderful care for him throughout his battle with cancer. Visitation will be held from 3:00pm – 7:00pm Monday, December 27, 2021 at Pearson’s, 149 Breckenridge Lane. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at St. Francis in the Fields, 6710 Wolf Pen Branch Road, Harrods Creek, followed by a private burial at Cave Hill Cemetery. There will be a reception at Big Spring Country Club following the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Bellewood and Brooklawn 3121 Brooklawn Campus Drive, Louisville, KY 40218 or the Lincoln Heritage Council of the Boy Scouts of America P.O.
