James R. Peabody


PEABODY, JAMES ROYDEN, JR., of Louisville died peacefully at his home on January, 28, 2012. He was 97.

He was a graduate of Male High School and completed a post graduate year at Woodberry Forrest School. He graduated from the University of Virginia, received his MBA from Harvard Business School and his law degree from the University of Louisville. He practiced law for many years as a partner in the law firm of Stites, Peabody and Helm.

He served in World War II as a captain in the Navy. Royden was a codeveloper of Bashford Manor Mall from Bashford Manor farm. The farm had belonged to his grandfather, George James Long, and had three Kentucky Derby winners at the beginning of the 20th century.

An avid athlete, Royden was the basketball high scorer at the University of Virginia in 1936. He was a two-time Kentucky State squash champion and eight-time tennis singles champion at the Louisville Country Club. A great golfer, he was the Louisville Bar Association Champion three times along with many other golf trophies. He also enjoyed bridge playing as recently as last week.

He was a member of the Louisville Country Club, Pendennis Club, River Valley Club, Wynn State Club and "Z" Society at the University of Virginia.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Lampton Peabody; and his children, J. Royden Peabody III, Mina P. Coggeshall, John C. Peabody, Harriet P. Laveran and Mimi P Griswold. He had 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A private funeral service will be held at Cave Hill Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 2, 2012. Friends to gather at Broadway gate at 10:15 a.m.
