Edward R. Dumesnil

Edward Rowland Dumesnil, Jr. was born in Louisville on August 4, 1925, and died at his home on January 29, 2012.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion Rogers Dumesnil and Edward Rowland Dumesnil, and his sister Ann Dumesnil Lyle.  He attended Belknap School, Highland Junior High School, Rugby University School, and was a graduate of Culver Military Academy.  He attended Berea College, Berea, KY., in a US Navy pre-officers training program (V-12) and served at the end of World War II on two naval vessels in the Atlantic Theater.  He attended the School of Commerce of Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.  After graduation he worked on West Main Street in Louisville for six years for his uncle, Joseph Peterson Dumesnil, and with his cousin, Joseph Peterson Dumesnil, Jr. at Carter Dry Goods Company.  When the ownership of the wholesale business changed he was employed by the Cochran Foil Company which became Anaconda Aluminum.  Later he headed Industrial Subdivisions, Inc., a building construction company, until the business evolved into equipment rental, Taylor Rental Center.  In the 1960’s he served as a whipper-in for Judge Roscoe R. Dalton, M.F.H. (Master of Fox Hounds) who along with others formed the Long Run Hounds.  He was a former member of the Shelby County Cattlemen’s Association and a member and past vestryman of Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church.  He married Shirley Rankin of Monticello, Wayne County, KY. in 1957 and had three children: Marion Rogers Dumesnil who is married to Frank Vincent Norman, Henry (Harry) Alexis Dumesnil whose wife is Jennifer Skogland and Rankin Baker Dumesnil.  He enjoyed his five grandchildren, Ramsey Baker Norman, Ryan Dumesnil Norman, Macauley Edward Norman, Grace Rogers Dumesnil, and Elizabeth Rowland Dumesnil.  He is also survived by his sister Jean Dumesnil Miller and her husband Samuel Gordon Miller, and much-loved neices, nephews, and cousins.

Memorial service will be held 11 AM Friday February 3, 2012 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church 2822 Frankfort Avenue with private burial Cave Hill cemetery.  A reception at the church will follow the service.  Arrangements under the direction of Pearson’s. 

It was his wish that any expressions of sympathy go to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church or the charity of the donor’s choice.
