Betty W. Smither

SMITHER, BETTY W., of Louisville, passed away February 3, 2012 peacefully at home surrounded by her family.

She was born January 1, 1934 in Louisville, to the late William and Attaway Allen.

Betty was a 1951 graduate of duPont Manual High School and obtained bachelor's and masters degrees from the University of Louisville. She taught English and creative writing at Jefferson Community College's Southwest Campus for many years and was an original member of the faculty when the school opened. At school she met and maintained close friendships with many of her fellow faculty members and students throughout her life.

She was a member of Chi Omega sorority; the Woodcock Society; The Filson Club; the George Washington Foundation; the Lewis Family Descendants and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She took great pride being a direct descendant of the Washington and Lewis families of Virginia.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Robert L. Smither Sr.; her children, Robert Jr. (Sally), J. Michael (Carolyn) and Bill (Sonja) as well as her beloved grandchildren, Lee, Justin, Ryan, Claire, Dylan, Allison, Cameron, Casey, John, Nik, Jamie, Taylor and Allie.

There will be a celebration of Betty's life on Monday, from 5-8 p.m. at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane.
