Stewart Edward Bland
Stewart Edward Bland, 66, lifelong resident of Louisville passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at Jewish Hospital.
Stewart graduated from University of Louisville with a Bachelor of Arts, Political Science degree & was also graduated from the University of Louisville School of Law, Juris Doctor. He was a Senior Law Clerk for the United States District Court of the Western District of Kentucky under Chief Rhodes Bratcher & then served in the same district as Assistant United States Attorney. He was one of the youngest Federal bankruptcy judges to be appointed, serving for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Kentucky from 1975 - 1982. Most recently, he had ventured into sole practice but remained in the offices of Borowitz & Goldsmith, PLC where he had previously been of counsel for over a decade. He was a specialist in large Chapter 11 & agribusiness bankruptcies of which many of his published opinions addressed.
Judge Bland was a member of American, Kentucky & Louisville Bar Associations, the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges & other professional associations. He was also a member of Louisville Lodge # 400 F & AM, Scottish Rite & Kosair Shrine Temple & was a former member of Louisville Court # 131, Royal Order of Jesters.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Mary "Missy" Wellman Bland; his daughter Meredith "Mindy" Bland; sister Rochelle Bland Baumann ( Dave ) ; nieces Lauren Baumann Pierce ( Patrick ) & Allison Baumann.
A celebration of life will be at 3:00 P.M. Friday at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Ln.
